10-Point Walker & Commode Safety Checklist

1. Frame and Structure

  • Inspect for visible cracks, bends, or damage in the frame.
  • Ensure all joints and welds are intact and secure.
  • Confirm that the walker stands evenly on all four wheels without wobbling.

2. Wheels

  • Inspect wheels for wear and tear.
  • Ensure wheels rotate smoothly without resistance.
  • Confirm wheels are securely attached to the frame.

3. Brakes

  • Test the brakes for smooth engagement and release.
  • Inspect brake cables for fraying or damage.
  • If possible, adjust the brakes if they do not hold the walker in place when engaged.

4. Handles

  • Ensure handles are securely attached and not loose.
  • Inspect grip material for tears or excessive wear.
  • Verify correct handle height for the user (i.e.: Handles should be within a few inches of wrists when standing with arms at side).

5. Seat (if applicable)

  • Inspect the seat for cracks, tears, or other damage.
  • Confirm the seat is securely attached and stable.
  • Test the seat to ensure it supports the user’s weight without wobbling (i.e.: Feet should be touching the ground when sitting, and brakes must always be engaged when sitting on a walker).

6. Foldability (if applicable)

  • Ensure smooth folding and unfolding.
  • Check that locking mechanisms engage properly.

7. Accessories and Attachments

  • Inspect any baskets, trays, or other accessories for secure attachment.
  • Ensure attachments do not interfere with operation or stability.

8. Safety Reflectors/Markers

  • Check that reflectors or safety markers are clean and visible.
  • Inspect for missing or damaged reflectors.

9. General Maintenance

  • Tighten any loose screws, bolts, or fasteners.
  • Inspect for cleanliness. Advise customers to clean equipment regularly to remove dirt, debris, and any potential slipping hazards.

10. User Manual

  • Review the user manual for any specific maintenance or safety instructions.
